Region V Future Stars Preparation Workshop
September 12-14, 2008
Junior National Team Coaching Staff
This is another training opportunity developed in Region V to mimic the National Future Stars Workshop in Colorado Springs. This Workshop does not conduct the competition as is done at the National Workshop but the competition is being hosted by Hocking Valley and Mike Serra on October 11th, 2008. This event tries to combine the clinic aspect for the gymnasts with the lectures and instructional presentations to the coaches as is done at the National Workshop. Kelly Crumley and Juha Tanskanen, ( The other two National Team Coaches in our Region) could not attend this years Prepartation Workshop due to the JOPC Meeting in Austin, Texas this weekend. A large portion of the success of this workshop is due to the input and direction given by Kelly Crumley in the intial concepts of making this happen on a smaller scale in our Region. I do feel this is one of the best clinics for gymnasts, parents, and coaches that is offered. The credit for making this a great event goes to all of the coaches listed below who worked so hard this weekend. These are truly the hardest working coaches in Region V.
The parents of these young gymnasts are hungry for information. We provided the opportunity for them to get information and for them to ask questions. Hopefully, they were provided avenues to help them get answers in the future. The parent workshop is one of the best things that happens at this event. Many of these parents are starting to get more involved in long term support of their sons and really need direction.
There were two emphasis on coaches education. The first was on Trampoline. The trampoline video Joy Umenhoffer gave me at one of the workshops was played for the coaches with a discussion on how trampoline is an important training tool. I tried to show a direct relationship from some of the tramp drills to some of the skills learned on the apparatus. We also brought in one coach just for the trampoline rotation this year to work with the gymnasts. The Second was on the jam. The jam is a skill that is problematic for the 12 year old age group. I feel that it takes a number of years to develop a good jam. It is also really important in the code of points. For these reasons a session was devoted to the jam for the coaches as well as emphasized in the clinic for the older gymnasts.
The information below is the preliminary materials emailed to the community and posted on the web. This gives a pretty good rundown of the event.
